How long would a 3" red tail catfish last in a 85 gallon?

Tank foot print and filtration will make a difference, not long though.

Mine has went from 2" to 12"+ in a couple of months. He's quickly outgrowing my 450g.

2 months tops. RTC's as babies frequently grow 2-3" a month or in some cases even more depending on feeding. I've seen several grow 4" in a month first hand although I don't think it's as common.

Mine can easily swallow 20+ massivore pellets in one feeding and is still looking for more. Expect to spend a lot of money on food.
