Only a month or two? I'd think with good maintenance he has a little longer than that. Not too much, but at least six months. Depends largely on filtration and feeding practices, though.
i know EVERYONE else will say otherwise but not everyone has a bottomless pocket
I know its cruel to house a fish in a tank that size but then again IMO it would be cruel to house fish in whatever size any tank even if it was a 7000 gallon tank, wouldnt it be better if they were out in the wild. but its a hobby and its a hobby i enjoy and if i were to give him advice I would tell him that the fish will grow too big too fast and it wouldnt even matter if he threw the RTC in the pool. I know it is still cruel but what can we do stop buying fish, well at least u guys gave him great advice and now he will enjoy his RTC for 20mins. I know u guys were having a good time but in reality let the guy enjoy his fish same way u other guys do. Now he knows that he only has a few months and i say enjoy your RTC buddy dont let them tell u otherwise but just know its only temporarily
Well considering you posted this question 5 hours ago, it probably has already out grown the 85g
Seriously these guys do grow at least 2-3 inches a month. If the footprint of the tank is 48x18" and you have heavy filtration I would say 4-5 months max.
lol thanks everyone... the footpritnt is 4ft~18inch~20inch high. I knew these fish get big. my lfs had one for a good price and it looked like a really beautiful fish. I was just wondering how long I could keep it in my tank until I would have to go out and buy a bigger one... after these posts i'm not so sure its a good idea to buy him.
thanks again

Here was my experience: I started my 3" cats out in a 55 gallon, but within no more than 2-3 months, they were very ready to be moved to a 120. They have since been moved to a 180, outgrown that, and now into a 600 gallon. This all happened within about 15 months and in 18 months, they've hit 24 or more inches. The 600 will just be another stepping stone. They will need to be in something much larger in probably a year or so. Hope this gives you a better understanding of the rate of their growth.
