The catfish, if it has lasted this long should be fine.
For heaters I suggest Azoo brand titanium heaters. I bought mine online, it was pretty cheap and won't break.
As for your worms. It's a sign that you are overfeeding or undercleaning. Don't get a fish to take care of them, just up your tank cleanings.
 
I already do small water changes every other day that equal to about 30% a week. You think I can do more? I thought that I may be doing too many as is. I have 2 aqua clear 110 on a 120 gallon high aquarium. The fish will be moving to a 50x50x24 cube in 2 weeks. If I can do more water changes I will. I think I am more likely feeding him too much. thanks for advice though.
 
Instead of putting a heater in your substrate or in your canister try the new version that runs inline with your canister and uses the return hose to flow heated water in to the tank.
