red tail catfish experience

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right now he's in a 220 with some other large friends. We got him in March of this year and he was about 3" long. The cutest little baby ever (although our rtc x tsn was pretty darn cute too as a baby). Now, 7 months later our little red is at least a foot and if I were to take him out of the tank I'd need both hands to hold onto him! His head is MASSIVE! We're starting to worry at this point that he could eat a blood parrot that's honestly as big as my hand! I think you might get a year and a half to two years out of a 120 if he was pretty much the only fish in there, but honestly, that's the ABSOLUTE max amount of time (and I may even get slammed by other users for saying that :(). If you're serious about a RTC then you need to make sure you've got some BIG plans that you absolutely can and are willing to carry out in the near future. Otherwise, I'd say go with another cat. There are some pretty cool cats that max out around 18". They may be a better fit for what you've currently got.

Mine went from 3 inches long, and a head the size of a quarter, to about 19" long and about 5" wide across the back of his head since I got him in October 2010. He recently swallowed a 6" green severum that I thought was too big for him to get down lol! Very mellow fish and one of the most personable fish I have ever owned. I hand feed mine all the time and the family absolutely loves him. It's honestly like having a dog they are that attached to him lol. I've been told that I'm never allowed to sell him cause he is part of the family lol! I just told her 'well I hope you know what your in for!'.

RTC one of the fastest growing sob's in the aquatic world. Beautiful fish with awesome personality. Eats anything that fits in it's mouth and eats alot during the day. Surprisingly one of the few cats that are not always hiding. Their growth rate is real fast, a friend of mine bought a 2incher and out grew his grow out tank quick.
