Hi been a while since I've posted but got an empty tank except a pled that's about 7inches

I am buying a red tail catfish and I was wondering how long I can keep it in a 4ft tank 16 inches wide and 22inches high

At the moment the catfish is approximately 3 inches and will be moved to a bigger tank

Thanks for your help in advance

I had mine from 6", in a 55g for about 3 months. He's been in my 180g for maybe 2 or 3 months, he's now 12". Couple more months he will be going in a 10'x3' deep intex pool indoors.

They grow FAST! He will outgrow that 4' tank in a short few months!

Good luck... Well worth it if u can keep him... He's by far my favorite!

1"/ month. Could be faster depending on feeding

6'x2'... For a few months. Maybe 1/2 year. Then huge! 2000g is the smallest I have seen recommended for an adult... But larger is preferred

I had a red tail in my 210 for about a year. Then he went in a 700 gal swimn pool for another year. By the time i got rid of him,he was over 42 in long and weighed about 50 lbs or so
So, 2000 gals. Sounds good to me

Crudely speaking, in adequate keeping ~2' in year one, 3' in year two, 4' in 4-5 years. YMMV.

The rule I follow is 4xL by 2xL physical footprint as a minimum, where L is the length of your pet fish (this is for not too active of a swimmer), which means for a 2' RTC, one would need an 8'x4' tank = 500 US gal at 2' depth. Again, this is minimum. Bigger is better.

There exist other opinions of acceptable dimensions with some followers, even stating 1xL for the width is adequate... but not me.
