Red Tail Catfish Tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had 2 and there was severe aggression so it never worked for me
This is what I usually hear so I would advise against it. They’re definitely territorial towards each other and it’ll only be heightened in that size tank and only two specimens

I believe 2 red tails will have a lot of aggression. I think you need around 3-5 to keep the aggresion down. Not sure, don't quote me on it. I would like to see thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter opinion on this.

Also, the safest tank mate for an RTC that isn't an RTC is a pacu. This is the only fish I wouldn't have a worry about.
Other fish but not as safe, but possible: Paroon, Arapaima, Jaws, Tiger shovelnose,
Other fish that you'll see with RTC but are not compatible: Arowana

It's not that Arowana's aren't compatible with RTC. They can live together, but when they are both at max size the RTC will destroy the arowana eventually.

Aww..I was too late reading all the replies.I already bought the fish arriving today.I will see how if any aggression will occur between these two.

IMHO, chances are 90% you will have problems because the tank's so small. In a larger tank, like 1000 gal and bigger, they would be quite fine, chances are. All in all it is always a gamble but the chances must be taken into account. Be prepared to separate if one will bite the other.

RTC are said to be territorial only up to a few inches, then they relax, but this is in large enough tanks. 5' tank for two 10" RTC is too small - they will be in each others face too often, especially at night - this time of day should be your main worry.

I second what thebiggerthebetter said. You will probably have some issues in a tank that size. I have a few together but they are in a 400g until they are big enough for the pond. But all fish behave differently and that being said you never know so be prepared to separate them if fighting ensues..

Here's an update.Turns out the new catfish was 1 inch smaller. When I introduced the new catfish to the new tank. The bigger one chases the small one. There's a bit aggression by the big one.but after awhile, the bigger one just stay away and the smaller one swims in the tank.I will keep on monitor if anything gets worst.
