.Just stay away from large quantities of feeder goldfish as they have been shown to cause cardiovascular problems in large fish.
that's new and intriguing to me. are you personally able to elaborate any further on this?

I recommend the hikari sinking pellets it has a picture of an RTC on the front they will really bring the color out in the tail

I FEED MINE FISH FROM THE MARKET CUT IT UP IN LARGE PIECES LAST IN HIS BELLY FOR AT LEAST 4 DAYS THEN HE STARTS SWIMMING AROUND LOOKING FOR MORE.

I have a 5" RTC and i feed him frozen beef heart cubes. he will usually eat 2 of them in a sitting a couple times a day. He is growing very rapidly.

Hikari Massivore Delites are high in nutrients and they are supposed to increase color. I also have a RTC. What is a good live food to give them as a treat once they get big? I've heard of people using feeder frogs but I can't find them anywhere. What species of frog or fish would make a good live feeder?

Any pellets thats high in carotenoid would help. But genetics also plays a big part.
I see RTC with virtually no red at all.. not even a shade of pink and ive had one thats
really red.. :hearts:

I was browsing the net for "cartenoid" and came up with this site http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=116
all the foods they list that are high in cartenoid are fruits and vegetables.

"Food sources of carotenoids include carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, collard greens, papaya, bell peppers, and tomatoes. To maximize the availability of the carotenoids in the foods listed above, the foods should be eaten raw or steamed lightly."

So I was wondering if feeding them these raw fruits would work?

I have heard before that in the amazon they eat fallen fruits from trees when the forest is flooded, although I have always thought that the red comes from eating crustaceans.

Try cichlid colour pellets, Hikari has a couple of types, you want the sinkers I would think. If the pellets are a bit small and don't get him interested you could use them to "gut load" feeder fish or make a little cut in a fish fillit and put some in there. In the wild thay also eat fruit, especially dates, give them a go for variety. Shrimp should be good for colour too, but make sure you are leaving the shells on, thats where the colour goodies are at. Try him on parboiled (and cooled) pumpkin and carrot, loads of colour enhancers in both. Any fish or seafood should be good, but not too many goldfish as the have a bad enzyme, I think it is thyaminase. Try crayfish (crawdads in the US). I am not a fan of feeding warm blooded protein (chicken, mice, beef heart, etc.) to any fish, but I am not saying it does not work for some people. I just think that fish have a hard time digesting warm blooded protein and fat, so it just passes through them and pollutes their tank water. IMHO. Any way, good luck with the RTC, and how about a picture of this bad boy?
Cheers,
Ken.
