red tail in a 55 gal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Either a 60 gallon or a 100 gallon would better for a while. This is a common story however with quite a few fish. Be aware that not all LFS's have the ability or the desire to take back overgrown fish. Most of them are difficult to sell and expencive to house.

We wouldn't ever get a fish without having the ability to care for it for it's entire life. IMO anything else is irresponsable.

bgonz looks like you got a nice cat and what size is your tank? and yea my liek 3 1-2 frontosa was eaten for dinner. as soon as i turned off the light it came right out and whent nuts. he has had no problem catching him but the only thing is that it couldnt fit in his mouth . next morning there is no sign of the fish until i looked at the size of its belly. if i was planning to get a bigger tank whta would be a good size thats liek just enought not over kill thats ALOT OF MONEY

In my opinion RTC are a fish that will need a tank that is at least 8' by 4' so you are looking at a tank in the 500 gallon range. There are many different cats that you could get. You really need to find a home for this fish.

If only everyone would follow this guideline. Of course too many people don't even research what they are buying.

I myself would love to have a RTC. Even though I have large tanks for my Arowanas I just don't believe I could properly house a RTC without building a pond.

i also have a 45 gallon corner tank setup idk if i should only keep the red tail in the 55 by itsself for now and put the dempsey in that tank and oscars r dumb so ill let it get eaten. maybe the aquirum will take my fish.

You could possibly set oup a swimming pool for the RTC, but this would require a large amount of space and then filtering and heating could pose a problem.

bob i was thinking about only putting the rtc in the 55 by itself and then give it to my freind who has a 125 and a smaller rtc. and save some money

If your friend has a RTC already and only a 125, what is he gonna do when hes got 2 giant RTCs?

even a 125 is way to small for a RTC you need a 400g min tank size
