Red Tail Tiger Shovelnose Hybrid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Theoretically, I agree... if different geographical morphs of fasciatum were to be used. But practically, I personally don't see much of variation in the appearance of the RTCxTSN hybrids (barring obvious mutations and disfigurements like the duck-bill). They all look very much alike to my untrained eye. (Maybe someone sees the differences, and that's ok. Please chime in.)

To me, this means that only one morph of fasciatum (even if there are multiple, which is not a given and not proven) is used for the production of these hybrids.

TSN genus needs much taxonomic work too - it is very far from finished and, moreover, there is no overall agreement on the number of species and their distinction between the taxonomists themselves!!

It is often very hard for hobbyists like us to tell the "described" species from each other. If one starts supposing the existence of sub-species, undescribed species, natural hybrids between different TSN species, and regional morphs, we might just give up on the ID efforts as we'll not be unlike Alice in Wonderland - anything's possible, nothing's reliable. :)

IMHO, until more is known firmly science-wise, we just need to cautiously go by what is more or less known without entering the field of fantasies and wild speculations. Occam's razor is a wise principle.
