Red Tailed Catfish..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A 3000 gal could house several large catfish with proper filtration. I'm still gathering materials and planning my big tank/pond(some argue it's both), but in the end it will be around 4500-5000 gal and will house about 20 monster catfish. The filter will be in the 500 gal range. So dream big. 3000 gals is much larger than you think. I currently have a pool that is 1100 gal with 8 catfish that can all exceed the 3' mark, but for now they range 14-18". BTW I hate my pool. everytime I bump it or do a water change or move a rock or filter it starts to leak. Large cattle trough, or home made pond with actual pond liner is a much better idea. I'll be building a timber pond to rehouse my fish until their mega tank is built. I can't stand the thought of that leaky pool in my garage any longer.

I'm planing concrete myself...Why is it that ALL big cat keepers start thinking POND?....LOL

It's my fault. When I first started on this site I got the cattle trough for my hybrids at the time, and everyone copied me lol. JK, I got the idea here, but didn't see anyone before me using them exclusively for catfish and I was like you can create whatever footprint you want with a pond and keep any kind of fish no matter how big so long as you have the space for it. lol. Bunch of copyCATs in here!!!!

LMAO....
So basicly....it's all YOUR fault?
I'll be sure and tell my wife...she's under the impression that everything's My fault...

LOL, that's right it's all my fault. Hey, think about it though if not me someone would have thought of it. There's plenty of people who were doing it I was just one of the first to bring it public. I get so many PMs from people wanting to set up ponds for their catfish. Thinking of doing an article on cheap ponds for huge fish.

Thats a great use for the Blogs... I use mine for helpful hints and articles all the time. Of course Li's going to spring MFK 3.0 on us and lose all of this carefully crafted info....LOL

I bought my first 300 gallon Rubbermaid in 1997 to house my then 2' rtc out doors for the summer so I didnt have to run back and forth to school a few times a week to feed him, I ran it inline with my outdoor pond filters and it worked great.

In 1992 I built my first of two indoor ponds for a couple of large cats. 1200 gallons and 2400 gallons. They both didnt work out too well as they cost way to much to heat in the winter and the humidity in the basement was unbearable.:(

I'll gladly blame you though for the ideas :D

Lol, cool. Like I said I wasn't the first, but I couldn't find any info on them when I first started on here. So I had to make it up as I went along. I've seen many LFS that have indoor ponds when I was a little kid. One had a 3' channel cat. I've had tons of PMs about ideas for ponds. I helped one guy design a 24,000 gal outdoor heated pond for his catfish. Don't know if he's completed it yet, but I want him to post some pics on here for us if he did.

lol well then how many catfish like the RTC can fit in the 3,000 gallon pond or pool? And what else can go in the pond or pool with them?

I would guess more than you would like to feed :D
