Red Tails

HOLY ****E!! I knew they could eat things pretty large but that's insane!!! And by TSN do you mean a tigrinnus? Would love to see a pic of that hybrid! But with this info I'm more iffy on them, the ones they sell at my LFS are about 4 to 5 in, my red wolf fish is 6in and my ornate is 10 in, I think they'd be safe for a while, and after watching and reading about them I talked to my guy down at the LFS and he said he'd buy it back from me once I started worrying about it eating other pets, or just trade for another 4 in, I know they wouldn't be food (well maybe for the ornate) but my red wolf and ornate get along fantastically, dogpile and everything have had the combo for months w/o probs, not even a fin nip.

By tsn he means a tiger shovelnose catfish, though a tigrinus would be nice too

If you are like me when I first started keeping fish, the RTC quickly became my favorite so no love loss over him eating his mates lol. My big hybrid would eat 12" + Oscars on occasion. WHen people found out I had large ponds in my garage they would bring their oscars, and jags, ect. I had no where else to put them except in with my large catfish. So if they lived they were in a large pond and well fed, but every now and then one would show up missing including a 14" jag lol.

Damn. Thats voracious, i might be going with a Lima or something less intense. Or just be constantly trading back once a month lol. Ah i see i gotta find a picture of that hybrid sounds really nuts, a tigrinnus hybrid would be insane tho.

the problem w/ trading back.. other then the fish is likely only going to die in some one elses care... is you are constantly taking the chance w/ a new fish also introducing potential disease ect... and while one cat may be mello.. one may be nasty... and you won't know until your obviously valued other fish are dead/food. Each cat even w/in the species has had different temperments/personalities. plenty of other neat SA cats that would fit the bill.... but I do understand the attraction to RCs.. the one I had the only reason I haven't replaced him yet w my other cats is I just haven't found one w/ his personality yet.

Ah. I see i've never been one to trade fish around a lot so Ithat was really helpful, I should have figured that, especially seeing as though they are WC red cats at my LFS which I would assume makes them a better candidate for poisoning tanks then CBs. Will more then likely now go with a lima or tiger shovelnose

I would go with the lima. A tsn will grow almost as a large as a rtc and is more predatory as well. You would gain a few more months but either way, all your other fish would be dinner.

Also tsn can spaz out a lot more in all clear sided aquariums or aquariums period. I noticed mine were much more mellow in a pond where they couldn't see out the sides. Didn't freak out when I walked past them. square boxes imo are not well suited to any large catfish even less so for tsn. Lima are in that category also, but you're more likely to get a large enough aquarium to compensate for that with a lima than with a tsn. :)

I agree.. owning a TSN and the Hybrid my TSN needs more "space" of the 2.. and is a true predator.. the steameline shark-like body wasn't made to sit and wait for food ;) Limas are a great fish though particularly to start with, if you don't mind the $$$/delicacy Tigrinus are about as fancy a smaller cat as you can get. limas are def easier imo to keep and generally what I would call a "beginner monster" because of how easy they are, but if you aren't afraid of a challenge a Tig is about as "striking" as you'll get.

I just noticed a aquascape had a new kind of cat in I haven't seen for sale, ageneosus marmo something haha its spotted and looks kind of like a little whale shark, its been hard finding info on em. Anyone keep em?
