Festae arent that slow growing, give them at least a 4' tank to grow out in. the better diet and more water changes you do the faster they grow Ive had some that grow slow and some that grow fast. ie; 1.5"-8" in 7-8 months, then from 3"-8" in a year. so depends on how you do things good luck. generally the males will out grow your females to give you a basic idea to which is which.

I agree about the water changes and diet helping them grow better/faster. Again, I got mine at about 3-3.5" and he is close to 8" now. I've had him for close to a year... I feed him very good and the water is top notch, however IMO compared to some of the other cichlids I've raised they grow slower. Well, then again you said 4' tank whereas I kept mine in a 56g (2.5' long) for a few months... that might be why mine did not grow as quick.

totally agree with freshwaterpredators. i got my festaes in the beginning of december at .5 .75. now they are 2-2.5... give them space, a balanced diet, and PLENTY OF WATER CHANGES!

Festae are pretty slow growing... as for how long before you can sex them... I think about 3-4" you should be good. I got mine at just over 3" and I knew he was male. They can stay in a 29g for a little while, but it is hard to give a precise time period before they got too aggr, maybe a few weeks or a few months. One female by herself in a 125g will be fine and then some... will there be anything else in the 125g?

What lfs did you go to? And how much did they charge? I just got a group of 10 from a vendor here for $110 shipped. So $11 each. Just wondering, because i havent seen any lfs sell those at all by me.

i went to a fish store in new jersey absolutely fish they were marked $10 but since i took all of them $6 then i had a 20% off coupon and a 10 dollar off coupon. So $14 bucks for all of them.

they are in a 20 gallon no agression yet but i have a few tanks ready
