good luck. generally the males will out grow your females to give you a basic idea to which is which.
I agree about the water changes and diet helping them grow better/faster. Again, I got mine at about 3-3.5" and he is close to 8" now. I've had him for close to a year... I feed him very good and the water is top notch, however IMO compared to some of the other cichlids I've raised they grow slower. Well, then again you said 4' tank whereas I kept mine in a 56g (2.5' long) for a few months... that might be why mine did not grow as quick.
