Male. Females lack the spangles that a male has.

My female has some spangles on her dorsal and tail fins.

Looks like a male to me and very nice.

She's not in her best colors in this pic but you can see the point. The whole forward half of the dorsal is dark blue or black on females.

I didn't mean to insinuate that the fish in question is a female. I, like everyone else, think this fish is male. I was just pointing out some rules for sexing aren't "hard and fast".:)

Do some males have black on parts of their dorsal fin as this one does, or is it located more to the front? I thought males had no black at all on the dorsal.

Festae have to have all black/blue front dorsal fins to be female, like in the picture balton posted up.

At what size should I be able to spot that dorsal din coloring. I bought this one because he had black on the dorsal, thinking he was a she. Oh well, they have some more...I guess I'll go back and try to find him a girlfriend.

I asked the same question with my 3" rt, and everyone was wrong. Everyone! You will just have to grow it out a little more to be certain. For now don't make any fish buying or selling moves based on its gender.
That black coloring on the dorsal fin changes! Mine only had a dot, now its the whole front 1/2. sexing this fish is not as simple as most people make it out to be at that size.
Its a very nice rt for 3".lots of color

i know its a little late but i looked it up and it turns out that i did have it turned around:nilly:but atleast now i know how to sex festaes.

My fault, I meant heavy spangling which is seen on males. Females IMO tend to grow out of the spangles at a large size.
