It's not really too tough to tell them apart based on the location of the ocellaris

FYI, I've seen Mayans labeled as 'True Festae' in Aquarium Adventure so I think mislabeling can also be a way to jack up the price on inexperienced hobbyists.

Mayan cichlids are often sold from distributors as Festae or "Red Terror". They can't ID them either.

I think petland is a good place(at least mine is) but their sources of fish are unreliable. For example, in a shipment of "captive bred" keyhole cichlids, an unknown or classified (but beautiful) related species came in with the normal batch and is now a priceless display fish. If it is captive bred how did the place get a hold of that?

I almost always see Mayans labeled as Red Terrors at the lfs and Festae are labeled Festae. And sometimes they go as far as labeling them "True Festae". But never once have I seen Festae labeled as Red Terrors.

If you really want a Festae, ask for Festae, not a Red Terror. Both fish are considered to have the nickname Red Terror to many lfs. Did you ask if it was Festae or Uropthalmus? If not, you're the only one who misidentified the fish.

You are correct I did misidentify the fish. The fortunate thing for me was that I was cichlid shopping, not looking for a Festae. When I saw "Red Terror" I thought that I was buying a Festae, but got the Mayan instead.

I hope that by posting this I maybe somebody who really wants a Festae will not buy a fish that they don't want.

For future reference, a Festae has the ocellaris high on the caudal fin, the Uro has the ocellaris in the middle of the caudal fin.
