i bought a red terror about 3 years ago.i didnt know anything about them, i just thought it was a cool looking fish. they sold it to me as a community fish, so there fore i put it in a tank with 4 other fish... he ended up killing off all the other fish, not eating them though, just killed them, and all the fish were of egual size... he actually tourchered a jack dempsey by striking it in the side over and over till there was a hole in it side .. he wont eat any live fish, he will only eat pellets. we have seen lots of other red terrors and none of them act like him or have the split tail like him. and all the other ones we see are in tanks with others. any info or comments on him, sometimes i wonder if he isnt a red terror but maybe a cross breed with something else.. thanks

looks like a mayan cichlid to me aka the false red terror. the scientific name is exCichlasoma uropthalmus. they are very commonly sold as red terrors because those who have not thoroughly studied the 2 species can't tell the 2 apart as juveniles.

he'll probably get to around 12" tops and they can be very aggressive as you've already seen. I'm surprised that they would have sold it as a community fish because both the real red terror and the fake red terror can be very aggressive. :)

Where did you buy it? It's unfortunate when you get bad info...

what does the true red terror look like??

i saw one at my lfs today, said true red terror, might go get him on monday! :D

The eye spot should only be about half the thickness of the stem part of the tail. that was how I was told to tell if it was a true red terror. Got mine from Rapps so I didnt have to worry if it was real or not.

not only that but true festaes have straight lips, both lips point forwards and look even, mayans have lips/mouths that curve upwards slightly and like your fish, the bars are more prominent at the top.

Red terrors are some pretty fish but what size do they have to get before theyre true color starts to come in?

my male was very colorful when I got him at 5-6 inches. he is super colorful now at 8-9 inches. feed him omega one cichlid pellets and veggie flakes, krill, worms, mealworms. black sand and black background.

Acutally I was wondering if he was gonna fade a lot as he gets older?
