I found this fish at the lfs and had to have it. As you can see it is quite beat up and only about 3" long. The price was 7$. I think he will be a great addition to my 155gl some day. What do you think about him/her? Is it male or female? I'm pretty sure it's a false red terror if I'm mistaken please correct me. Are these fish known to be quick healers? Thank you for your input.

Its a Mayan, False Red Terror, Uro (Cichlasoma urophthalmus).

I had a Uro that was beat up worse than that by some larger siblings. I put it in a separate tank by itself with a good dose of salt. In a couple of weeks it was all good. They grow up to be bruisers!

Cool thanks guys. I thought it has really good color too, when I first saw it it had dark stress bars and I was still able to see nice red on it. Melafix and salt treatment in progress. Thanks for the advice and kind words. Anyway to determine sex at this point other than vent?

Ive never been able to tell sex on them when Ive had them or seen them. There are no definitive characteristics that distinguish the 2 that Im aware of.

I've got two of these little guys myself, about 4". They are in a 6x2x2 community and they dont like each other. I'm gonna have to seperate them. They are supposed to be very intelligent, and I already agree after having them just a few weeks. Bold as brass aswell.

Btw, Mayans have been observed breeding beside coral reefs, so dont worry about the salt !!!
