Red Terror?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
why does everyone think it is a mayan?

What do you think about this fish? I bought it 2 days ago, it was sold to me a true "festae". Any guesses on the sex? The owner of the LFS made his best guess on this being a female. thanks guys.

Yep,
That's a true Festae.
Looks like a male to me...most females will have a dark area in the dorsal fin and depending on size, a female will be much more colorful than a male and have much bolder stripes.

Nice fish. How big is it?

we know its a mayan because of the spot on its tail. The mayans spot takes up about 2/3rds of the tail and a festaes spot is located on the top half, amongst other things.

Yours is a festae, but too small to be able to sex unless you vent. They are masters of deception and will look like males one day, females the next. The black dorsal is really not a good way to try and tell either. There are males that get the same thing in their dorsals, as proven by doing a search here on MFK for festae pics.

To see more color on yours, throw a dark background up or put a dark substrate. Its colors arent showing too well on the lighter substrate.

oh i see VRWC, thanks. What do you mean by vent?
It is about 2 1/2 to 3 inches long. Currently it is in a new 75G alone, I was thinking of an ornate bichir as a tankmate. I know red terrors are notoriously aggresive though, so I have my concerns, especially in a 75 gallon tank.

if its by itself (not a pair) then it should be fine especially since an ornate isnt a cichlid, and by vent he means to take the fish out and flip it over, look at its private area and if its like this Oo then its female, oo for male

TJW - Your Mayan looks quite sick. I'm not refering to the damage to his finniage but to his sunken belly. It might and probaly is just inadaquete feeding but I would keep a close eye on his underside as well as his poop. If he stops eating or your see white poop your new fish may have an internal parasite. I'm NOT saying he does just something to watch out for.

Thewaterboy - looks to me like 100% male festae at the moment, however juvi festae are notorious crossdressers.
