So I’m not really sure how long this will last but I’m gonna try something new. I’m going to start a series following the progress on my 60 gallon jack Dempsey and red Texas tank. I’m not to sure how often I’m going to post but I plan on trying to post at least once a week. In these post I plan to explain all that’s going on in my tank, ask questions, then if anyone has questions, then for me to answer them! My goal is to show wether this tank setup can and can’t workout in the long run.

I would like to start part buy giving a quick explication as of where I started with this tank to where I am. So I first bought this tank used off of kijiji for a little over 100 bucks. I came with a fluval 305 filter, a heater and a power head. It also came with a goldfish but I have since removed him from the tank and added him to my 40 gallon community tank. The seller of this tank use to own a bunch of tanks and this was her last one to sell and she gave me the rest of her used fish tank items, like loads of extra substrate, tank decorations, and a bunch of air pumps. So even though this was a pre established tank I decided to run a three week cycle without with anyway. Then it became time to buy my fish! I decided to start with a jack Dempsey, red Texas and just for fun a rainbow shark. These fish are all juveniles however he red Texas is an inch bigger than the others. I know most fish keepers wouldn’t recommend doing a tank with this stock but I decided to give it a try. I set up three caves in my tank a few pieces of driftwood. As for the fish behaviour, I only had them for a week. At first for a few days all fish hid in a cave but the red texas seemed to want to move caves every five minutes. Doing so he would try to scare the other fish out. But as time moved on they no longer even hid in the caves. The red Texas doesn’t bother the shark at all, but I have noticed the red Texas just following behind the jd, and the jd doesn’t seem to like it to much. Most often he just slides in a cave for a minute and the red Texas swims off. All three fish have been eating like crazy for the last two days as well. All and all I find this tank very fun to watch and very relaxing as the fish love to flash their fins!

For questions I am wondering:
How long do rt take to most often colour up?
Is there any thing you can do to help them colour up?
Have any of you guys every kept either fish, and if so what’s size tank did you keep them in?
Should I add live plants in my tank?
What other fish, if any at all, do you think I should add?

Well thanks for reading, if you have and tips questions or concerns please drop them in the reply sections
Thanks!!

I have one r/t I’ve had it since it was 2 inch
She’s very mean but co exist with others , she will pick on the weak
She first lived in a 40 gallon then a 150 and the a 300 but I recently moved her back to the 150 where she continues to beat on my carpintis and large blood parrots she’s about 7-8 inches now and has layed eggs twice

A good quality food and just good water conditions and the color will come out

Yeah, I know these rt can be crazy aggressive that’s why I put it with a jack Dempsey thinking jacks are just as aggressive. But I guess jacks only really get aggressive as they age. I think that either they will have so much aggression by the time that there adults that then they will be so tough they simply can’t kill eachother. But I have no idea and I have a tank divider ready to if needed
