I have a pair of Red Texas Cichlid in which the female is bigger than the male. Without planning they started the breeding dance but became too ruff with each other. I did separate them as I was moving them into their own 125g tank but thought I should let them heal up before trying them again. My questions are as follow.
With the chances of at least my male not being fertile should I even try the breeding again in a few weeks?
Do infertile males even try to breed? (he was trying really hard too)
Do I just need to Find a larger known fertile male?

How much ****** is she? How bad was he roughed up?

I don't know about texans, but I have gts. My female is twice as big as my male. And a lot more thick. My male was around 2" during their first spawn and successfully fertilized the eggs. He suffered a few split fins and a few missing scales. But healed up fast. The damage was done more so fighting a jack to impress his mate. Not from his girl.
I don't see a reason to find a different male, unless she really hurt him that bad. You could always keep them apart till his gets more size to him.

Not sure what happened there. The stared part was supposed to say "larger".

They both got roughed up pretty good split fins rough lips and missing scales. She is a good 1/3 bigger than him.

Don't you know that "larger" is a banned word! lol
I would second the advice and let him get a bit bigger before trying again.
