Red Texas, Flowerhorn or Red Devil?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
STAY AWAY FROM RED TEXAS IN A COMMUN! Some flowerhorns work well in community tanks, as long as you start working with them while they are young. Red Texas are just nasty fish your dollars will be destroyed...

RTs over a $100 and already showing color at a really young age? Baensch edition I have is a little out of date taxonomically, so I have had trouble IDing all the Vieja species. I am not very familiar with cichlids aside from some Oscars I have raised over the years, so don't know what these species (?) names are that you are using. Were these the fish that for a while were kinda associated with Cichlasoma genus? Clarification? All Vieja species? Did they get reclassified in last ten years or so?

Well, I havent seen any showing color at a "really young age". Usually they dont show until the 4+ inch range so I assume if youre going to spend that kind of money, thats what youd be looking for. Id never spend more than $20 or so on any red texas smaller than that, if I ever decided to get more. Like I said...go to aquabid.com and type in red texas in the search and look what comes up.

Im no expert by any means on vieja, so I dont have the answers to any of that. I do know that as of late, I have seen some very colorful vieja on here. Just type it in the MFK search (to the left) and look at all the ones that come up...some really beautiful specimens available lately...and I think most of them are community friendly if added at a young age.

My LFS is recommending rainbowfish instead of ANY cichlid. They said that almost any cichlid will end up harassing CK and SDs. What do you think?

i dont know about the clown knife but lots of people on here keep silver dollars as dithers in their tank and they are usually to fast for the cichlids to mess with, and usually cichlids dont really mess with non-cichlid tankmates so i doubt they would mess with the knife either, though out of the ones you named i think you would have the most luck with like a GT pair or something, if you want the red devil look i would go with a midas instead of a devil as many more people have success with keeping them in community setting

So with my setup, Midas, GT, more Dats and/or SDs OR add my little oscar and bichir from another tank. Just looking for a mix that has a good chance of working.

A Midas would be just as aggressive as an RD wouldn't it? I've never kept either, but I know they're both very aggressive. Cichlids would work fine in a tank that size, but you never know if you might get one that grows up to be aggressive. GTs, Firemouths, Jack Dempseys. They're all common, attractive and not that aggressive for the most part.

With your tank. I would personally hold off till the CK grows to at least 6" maybe 8". Then think about throwing in something... *Cough* Barred Midas. Later get a GT and maybe more SD's. I think your tank has alot of potential man. Keep us updated on choices.

That Midas would be too aggressive for what your trying to do. I had a midas that grow up with a jack and oscar and it beat them both down at the 6in mark. They are some beast.

yeah midas are aggressive fish but for the most part more people can keep midas with tankmates than they can RD, it is very rare to see a RD in a community tank, while it is quite common with midas
