Red Texas question and advice.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Comparing the two pics the and comparing specific patterns in specific areas they look extremely similar (the reds are so intense in the original It makes it harder to tell). I will say the fish is trending in the right direction with her overall colors getting warmer everyday so we’ll see. I’m hoping the drastic difference is mostly the result of possible stress from being the lowest in the pecking order.

Looks like obvious NAN lighting in initial pic, a common trick used to market this strain of fish. Personally, I would also suspect food that contains either Carophyll Red (another common trick used by breeders/vendors) or hormones. Lots of smoke & mirrors used with Asian strains of fish, especially red fish.

Thanks For the very informed response. I think you’re right. From what I can gather from the responses and my research I think the drastic change is a combination of run-of-the-mill LED lighting, food without hormones, and being a subordinate Female. She’s still a pretty fish even if I feel at the moment I vastly overpaid for her. I’m feeding her a high quality krill pellet as part of her regular diet so hopefully as she matures and gains some status her colors will start to pop more. I did contact the vendor to ask him about the lighting and her diet and got no response. 🙂Live and learn!

Adding a rock/plant printed background may help too. Deep/contrasting color with light/shadows I find helps bring out deeper tones. Try some floating cover as well. I use Finnex Led 24/7 plant lighting with full day cycle. On the pricey side but worth it with settings and remote.

I had good results using black backgrounds with RTs.
