so the petsmart by my house supposively has red texas, before buying i google to read up a little before i buy, i read on one website thst real red texas is born red, and that some store try to say other wise. so my question is what is your guys experience w/ them? the ones at petsmart are a greenish/ darkish color. they are only about 1/2 inch so who knows??

RTs are hybrids. NOWHERE in the wild (discovered anyways) are there "red texas". They are made using carpintis/cyanoguttatus, red devils, blood parrots and maybe something else.

Probably get better answers/info in the hybrid forum.

I agree you will get more knowledgable reponses in the hybrid section, it is moved. Good luck!

i doubt red texas are born red...they usually have to go through the fading process to get there. they are basically a texas where the fading gene has been introduced in order for them to peel to a shade of red/orange/yellow depending on the quality of the fish

They are not born at all they hatch :P
No they are not 'born' red. Some don't fade until they are 5 inches long or more. Some don't fade at all. Some that do not fade can be Red Texas though.

I have been in many Petsmarts. and i doubt they have Red Texas.

its says your in central cali coast, if that means the bay area then the petsmart in daly city has red texas, flowerhorns( which look like sh*t), and a bunch of other new cichlids.

everyone else thanks for responding....

It's hard to find a true Red Texas. Most don't go red at all. They may turn orange at best. Really doubt PetSmart has real Red Texas as they are bank breaking expensive. Even when small.

If you click on my profile and look at my thread of my "SRT", you'll see that not all Red Texas start out red. Mine started out as a very drab green/orange. Unfaded Red Texas can look like H. Cyanosaguthus(sp?) or H. Carpintis with slight differences(More orange/red in their fins and overall coloration, headshape, body shape etc). Highly doubt Petsmart has good quality Red Texas. I'm not going to deny that Petsmart can get Red Texas because hey, they just recently started selling EBJD's lol. Honestly, if you're looking for something that looks like the pics you see on the www, you're better off ordering one from Thailand.

i agree...with that said the more red the better...less red more orange yellow not as good...these are very expensive and hot fish right now and have not seen a full grown RT go for less than 200...there are people on here who sells RT nice one's too....

Red Texas - Belongs to the Golden base family of flowerhorns. To people and Thailand, Red texas are a completley different hybrid all together separate from Flowerhorns and are almost a different hobby in and of themselves. Originally created by breeding a Green Texas with a Mammon or KKP, then crossing back the offspring to the parents until a nice consistant red color is achieved. The most important feature of the Red Texas is quite obviously the color. Red Texas range in colors including:

- unfaded: lowes grade of RT
- yellow: second lowest grade
- Orange: majority of RT fall into this category
- Coral: pinkish but not quite full red
- Red: Most desirable color

The second characteristic that sets the Red Texas apart is the pearling. Red Texas can vary greatly in terms of type of pearling. There are three main types to consider when dealing with RT:

- Cyano or Dot pearls: These pearls come straight from one of the original 4 pure species cichlids used to create flowerhorn, Herichthys cyanoguttatus.

- Worm pearls: this is more of a desired trait in RT as well as Flowerhorns in general. RT with intense worm pearling are more costly and highly regarded than the Cyano or Dot pearling

- Net pearls: The most desirable and most rare type of pearling. Very few fish display this type. Net pearling is almost a white framing of the individual scales themselves. When taken in from a distance it resembles a white mesh net.

After coloring and pearls a red texas should then conform to normal flowerhorn standards (IE Large wide body, nice big tail, Large head, etc). Since the Herichthys species is not well known for their large nuchal humps, Red texas with heads are considered more difficult to come by.
