red texas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
do not get them at petsmart! the breeder who sold it to them probibley said they where red texes so they can ern more money! if you really want a red texes go to really good fish store with a good selection or order it. sometimes cregslist has fish there was recantly a 10 inch male red texes on cregslist for something like $200. I whould have gotten it if I could afford it!

U have a few options for getting a descent "red" rt.
1. Shell out a good amount of cash for an already faded one.
2. Order a small group of fry from a trusted vendor like Cjbarth -who is a vendor on this site
3. Get a larger group of cheap fry from a lfs and hope that at least one turns out nice

I would recommend option 1 or 2.
If u have patience u can wait and grab a mostly faded one for possibly as low as $90. It won't b an award winner, but can look really nice none the less. I know cjbarth sometimes has growouts for descent prices.
Option 3 takes time and patience and in the end u can easily end up with none of them fading :/
Option 3 can b a

PetSmart doesn't buy fish from local breeders, they deal with wholesalers that supply fish to retail outlets across the USA, by the millions. The RT's that you saw for sale at your LFS most likely came from Segrest Farms, one of the larger wholesalers in the US.

Quality will most likely be a roll of the dice, if they are cheap enough grow out a group & report back with the results.

Petsmarts around here got the tags for Red Texas this past Friday and expect them in the shipment hits coming week. That being said they only got one shipment of EBJD awhile back as a "special" and never got any more. They also have flowerhorn coming in, probably ZZ, but maybe a good one will hit the mix somewhere in there. They had two varieties of Moorii come in as well, and some others, didn't really look for the others though. I plan to go check out what comes in Friday, no harm in looking at what's out there after all. The one store that had flowerhorns come in this past Friday had one red dragon with some drak reds and two silvery ZZ's.

Oh, and the price listed on the red texas is $6 - not bad to take a chance on if they look like they have a possibility, even if it's for a hybrid project. (the flowerhorn were $28)

went to 3 stores in my area one had no tags or fish other 2 had 3 rt an 3 fh each store so i got 3 rt for 20 bucks worth a try to me. put them in with my 3 fh an 3 fh x texas all within a inch for got the all white midas from pet smart same store

I saw 1 at a petsmart near my house it was only $7 so I gave it a shot what the heck. I felt sorry for the fish The petsmart here have extremly poor knowlege and care for their fish. The other fish in the tank was a skin and bones lowgrade fh on its last breath and the lady had the nerve to tell me that it was a red texas too. Both had 2 totally different body types.:irked:
The "Rt" is only 1" so time will tell what it grows up to be.

I agree with j.blue and save the hassel and get some from CjBarth. Guaranteed quality fish

At $6-7 the price is certainly right. It will be interesting to see how some of these progress over time.

I got two today. Kinda curious as well. I'll post up results in a month or so.... assuming my festae and/or pike don't kill them first
