Red Texas?

A RT with actual red coloring is gonna cost you an arm and 3 legs and for that you will have import from Thailand. Typically you only see orange or yellow orange color around the US. Even decent orange could easily cost you a couple hundred. Cheapest I can think of is to order a bunch of fry from a reptuable dealer and hope for something nice and even then you still might not get any that peel/fade to color.

As Chris stated, the only way that you will get one that is red, is if you are willing to pay some serious coin, that, or you win the RT lottery, as the vast majority of what is bred in North America turn out orangish.

As an example, below is a large adult male that I used to own, I would consider that fish to be red (RT), but certainly not "super" red (SRT). Decent base color, but there is far better out there, and his pearling was too heavy for my liking. While a nice red texas compared to most that you'll see, his "wholesale" price from a wholesale dealer in Singapore was approx. $300. He was also approx 10" when I got him, and 11-12" in the photo below. I couldn't really complain as he was given to me as a gift.

CJbarth has bred some decent RT's, but again they are orange, I have yet to see any that peeled back to a red base color. If you do a search you can probably find a few photos of some of his fish.

Well the splotches have nothing to do with pricing and what not. Its a part of the peeling/fading process like you see with Red Devils and Midas. I will try to finds some pics of Chris's RT he has bred.

Sure they do. A fish that has already peeled/faded, is always going to be more $$$ than one that still hasn't completely peeled. I have seen a lot of mature RT's (as well as those listed as SRT's) that never did end up completely peeling. While Fleshy may personally find that look appealing most people wanting an RT/SRT do not.

Well going through his pages - very few fish completely "peel".

I prefer them with a mix of all their colors. Which sounds like it is good news for me.

At the price that Chris charges for his RT's you could buy a group of juvies, grow them out & keep the one that you like the best.

always the route I prefer to go, so I can enjoy em as they grow out and learn more about the fish

Yup, actually most likely going to go this route.

Plus we are both in Wisconsin - so they should be even cheaper for me.
