on guppys note if your phosphates are high enough to promote this algae i would encrease your water changes and cut back on the feeding this should keep the phosphates in check
 
one of my old 55 gal tanks for some reason turned like a reddish orange color too...never really figured out why so i sold it and got an nicer tank
 
Never seen this in a tank. But I have seen a whole creek here in Galilee, Israel, flowing blood red water in early summer, no kidding. Probably same algae boom. Looks like river of blood, makes you think about the origin of some Bible stories :D .

I am betting the stream has a fairly high mineral content. Then when it hits the proper temp, algae bloom.
