So I'd need a bigger tank if I want a RTM? All these people that post here with pics of their RTMs keep then by themselves in their own tanks? Not a community fish?

Parachromis in general aren't community fish. You can try just be aware it may not end well for others. You might get lucky and get one with a more peaceful disposition.

I agree with crazy mike. I have a pair of rtms that are just plain killers... I had just clown loaches with them. And if the clown loaches ever moved from there hiding place I would see a male or female rtm charging it from the other side of the tank just to attack them.. now I have the pair by them self.. lol

It can be a community fish if you have 1000 gallons to house tankmates in. Seen it done with large amounts of water successfully. Otherwise it is only a matter if time before the tankmates get destroyed.

I had one 8 inch male and two 6 inch females in a 180 with 10 other ca/sa cichlids and never had any problems but they did all grow up together so that may have played a factor in it but i also pick up some fish from someone and in one of his tanks i think it was 120 gallons and he had rtm, jags, vieja, midas, firemouths, green terrors, dempseys, convicts, datnoid, festea and i think a few oscars all the fish were like 4 to 6 inch and the tank was severely over stocked but there was no aggression in the tank that I saw all the fish had perfect fins and he said they've always been fine together and my male was very blue in his fins and face and it got intense as he got older so it can be done keeping them in a community tank but it is definitely a hit or miss thing

yup definitely planning to do the growing up together thing if I can only find all the fish within a few months of each other. Also probably going to go barebottom with very little décor for the first few months as well.. not really by choice, but perhaps starting them with no territory to claim will help? just a shot in the dark.. (oops my stocklist for a new 180g also includes a single RTM hopefully a female)

That could either help or open up the weak links to attack
