Red tinted Dempsey listed as Flowerhorn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

unless this is wild caught... there's no way for anyone to know if it's Ocotal, Gemmata, or Octofasciata without genetic testing. Especially after the fact that it was labeled as a FH and not a JD, at an LFS and not some reputable importer/collector, I'd only refer to this as a Jack Dempsey. Most people don't even know about Ocotal and Gemmata, only Octofasciata.

They're almost like chameleons- there are tons of color and pattern variation in JD's. Octofaciata can adapt to areas where red can dominate their color/patterns. I've always put my JD's in with very dark substrate. I've seen very ugly grey/tan specimens develop spectacular blues and reds in days all I had to do was get them off of the ugly grey/tan/white gravel or sand.

Interesting article. Yea she gave me him at their going JD price, the FH tank shared a divider with the Jack Dempsey tank and she even admitted after looking at it closer that it was def not a flowerhorn and that it either jumped the divider or someone was careless when putting them in the tank. I am anxious to see how he develops, and until then I will still continue looking for the illusive flowerhorn lol.
