Red wolf - tank footprint?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
+1 I grew my red out from 3 inch to 5 inch in a 30 ga now he's in the 70 up around 8 inch in the span of 6 months to give you an idea about growth rate (from 3 to 8 inch in 6 months), your tanks dimens are similar to my 30s just make sure you clean up wolves are messy! And mean, be careful w/ your fingers and tank mates.

If I keep one I will only have 1 wolf in the tank by himself. Any other suggestions for keeping an Erythrinus Sp.?

Tight lids, weighted down lid, floating plants (mine loves the marineland 3 foot bamboo leaf whether its rooted down or not). Also dont feed live too often, mine gets stubborn pretty quick when i do

Since my tank is 2 foot tall y think I should just keep the water level a lot lower since the wolf won't need the height? May eliminate the jumping and hitting the lid problem?

Foam tops (soft tops) are highly recommended for red wolves as they love to jump when spooked. Several members including me have lost red wolves due to continuous bashing on the heads against the canopy.

Don't underestimate they're jumping, I keep water level lower for my bichirs to breach comfortably and my red always been with bichir. He still manages things doing things like this to himself, and I use a Styrofoam lid. He hit his nose on the lip of the tank itself

Have melafix and pimafix handy, so if he does mess himself up you can treat immediately. Don't underestimate their accuracy with their jumps, mine got out of a heater hole I thought it was too wide to fit in, so it must have aimed itself perfectly to get through. He hit my wall about 3 feet up the lip of the tank, left a wet spot so I knew where he hit

So they commonly jump not just during water changes? My tank has nice plastic lid already, do I have to replace the whole things with a DIY styrofoam one? How does this work with lights?

I don't use lighting other then from my room until I can afford some dimmers but yes, they do jump for seemingly no reason. Dont know what it is really, they jump like madmen when younger and tend to calm down when older. Mine has literally whacked itself over, and over, and over again. Just chillin too, no reason for it. You just hear a whack and go "oh, bloody face done it again" (my wolfs name, named because of its insane jumping). My friends even just look at me and go "wolf fish?" If it happens when they're over, scares the crap outta girls haha

If you can figure out a soft material that won't hold condensation and get moldy go for lining the bottom of your lid with it. Or just use Styrofoam, plastic lids have a lot of edges and mine really messes himself up on them

When mine was younger its woken me up by smacking itself from ddead asleep. My tank is right next to my bed though.

Thank you so much for the advice, I wont take it lightly. Also, I am planning on having my tank in my room too (something my GF isnt too keen on lol) Is there a filter you can recommend that is fairly quiet? Do wolf fish need a bubbler?

They breach and breath atmospheric air, sort of like bichir. I never ran an air bubbler when it was just the wolf and ornate in my 30, and my filtration was the fluval U2 (the big in tank one) so it was really quiet, I'd suggest one of those with the dual output, then you can aim one up at the surface water and create ripples which would oxygenate the water. It'll be relatively quiet

No problem, I like to give people advice on these guys. I've successfully commed mine with fish half his size, growing them out with him. Only had one really bad incident, a heckelli got taken out badly all that was left was a head :/

Thank you so much! this talk has been invaluable! I will keep you updated if I end up getting one. Any wolf fish are really rare in this area.
