Hi all,

One of my guppy tanks has recently started to lose a bunch of its fish. A few weeks back we lost an otherwise healthy looking female. She had been hiding under the sponge filter for a while so we assumed she was pregnant, but rather found her dead a few days after the behavior began. A few days ago one of our male guppies who was fine the previous day turned up wedged between an ornament and the glass. We moved it so he could get out but he kept wedging himself back in. We put him in the hospital tank b ut by night's end he died.

The next day a female who had also been acting a bit shy lately started swimming sideways and tail up. We moved her to the hospital tank and began treating both tanks with melafix. After shed been moved out, one of our male guppies whod been fine was found lying on the bottom of the tank. We thought he was dead but he keeps poipping back up. That was 2 days ago, hes now in his death throes and the female has died.

Tonight I was looking at the remaining fish and noticed at least 3 of the females had think red poop coming out of them. I noticed then that the male on the bottom of the tank had one also. I thought it was odd since he wasnt eating. Then I noticed two of the females had these "poos" split in two, and they werent moving out. I think these might be some sort of parasite but Im not sure. I havent added anything to the tank in months, the only new things are the snails that keep reproducing. I am going to keep an eye on the fish but does anyone know what this might be if it isnt actually just poo? If so how might I treat it? I dont want to lose my adult stock :(.

Those are the buggers for sure!!! How did they get in my tank is my big concern now?

Maybe these articles will help you work it out -

Sounds like they can take up to 4 months to develop in a host fish and the larvae are most frequently transmitted via an intermediary host copepod but could also be transmitted directly.
Basically any new fish introduced in the last 4 months or so, and/or any live foods given to your fish?

Good luck.

They can infea fish for months before showing any exterior signs so this explains how they got there, praziquantel, levamisole, or flubendazole are all good choices for treatment.

We've been trying to get flubendazole under the generic name pancur as it is supposedly the only sure way to beat these guys. Do you know a good place to look for it like a vet or something cuz the online places are all international.

Flubendazole should be available through your local veteranarian as a dog dewormer, I believe that the dosage is 200 mg per 100 liters of water. This may be incorrect so double check. The stuff is only poorly soluble in water so dissolve it in a little ethanol before adding to a liter of water then add to tank, If needed you can use a bit of vodka to dissolve it in.
