Red worms coming out of anus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The general consensus after reading posts here and speaking with trustworthy lfs folks was that they werent worth treating because they were just guppies, attached or not. None of the traditional medicines work reliably and getting the stuff from the vet was a lot of work and money for 6 fish. We did the horrible and flushed them alive, although the toilet sanitizer seemed to be killing them as soon as they hit water. We bleached the tank and all of the snails died almost right away but now Im noticing these little white things spazzing out at the bottom of the tank. They look kind of like baby brine shrimp but aren't. I can't tell if they are dying or not, what might they be?

Well the little things seem dead but now some worms seem to be squiggling around the tank that I've never seen before. I added some Rid Ich to the tank in hopes that the chemical concotion will kill of whatever is left there.

Camallanus cannot be killed by RidIch alone. They can be a nightmare. Livebearers are generally prone to it.

Well the bleach is in there also, which we thought would kill everything. These little worms seem immune though.

Bleach will kill everything in a strong enough concentration but it would be best just to restart the tank from scratch.
I agree that treating guppies for this parasite is not generally worth the time and effort, this is a very persistant parasite. Only prize show guppies and much valued breeding stock for a developing line would IMO be worth it.

We're going to do a few 100% water changes and hope we get rid of everything. I was surprised that these worms survived a quarter of a jug of bleach though. We had just hoped to kill everything first to be sure that it wouldnt resurface once the tank was restarted.
