Anybody who uses social media to get accurate information about almost anything lacks the intelligence to know the difference. Try Google Scholar, but then the in thing today is to deny science.

Social media is just another sign that the world is soon going to end. lol

But isn't this forum just another form of social media?

Not going to lie, the only aquarium part of Reddit I find worthwhile is this one.

I just stopped visiting aquarium related subs, the people on there are way too sensitive.
Alot of people on there give beginners outrageous tank sizes(i.e 20g for a betta)..oh that fish is over 12"? You need no less than a pool if you want it to 'thrive'.

that's the thing with most of them, they are very keen on minimums being centered around what the fish will "thrive" in. Good at heart and good on paper, and not saying to constantly follow bare minimums, but that's kind of not the point of a minimum. There can be a morally accepted one, but the physical minimum, for a betta for example, is not (and I quote) "something with a three foot footprint". I imagine this also drives many away from the hobby, or at least gives them a sense of trust issues in terms of not knowing who is just talking out of their ass and who is actually giving good advice.

I do not think there is anyway to make a comparison between a site dedicated to a specific area of knowledge v.s one that is dedicated to nothing and pretty much allows anything.

Nobody comes here to talk politics, religion etc. We come here to talk about fish. That makes the membership relatively small. This also means it takes a lot less effort to determine which are the reliable providers of information and who is a rank newbie who barely has a clue.

I was educated before the digital age. Getting bad information was not easy in those days because there were filters which prevented that for the most part. Today anybody can say anything on the net and readers/vieweres have no idea about the reliability of that information. I learned to trust the science long ago and I have never abandoned that.

I have used Google search for a very long time and it has gone downhill for the most part in terms of the quality of the search results. if it doesn't make them money then it appears way down on the list. I will neve click on any sponsored information on Google as 99% of it is worthless as an answer to a serious query.

All it takes is a little common sense. "Common sense is what makes the common person uncommon." (Feel free to quote me on this anytime.)
