Redfin pickerel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here is a little better pic of his side pattern. Very neat looking fish. They kinda remind me of a muskie. Jordan hooked a few others but they were difficult to get to the bank. This guy even came off the hook but only after we had him on shore. That's a good thing I suppose that they arent hooked badly.

One kinda off topic question...could you keep a chain pickerel with gar? Would be an interesting setup although I figure a chain pickerel will need unheated as well and I dont know how well they would do together.

temporarily would work...and then the gar would eat the pickerel...those pike are easily swallowed given their body type and lack of spines. their darting motion may also set off the gars, and the pickerel would also be easily damaged if the gar even tried to eat it. i've kept the combo before briefly, but had to split them up. i would advise against it--

chain pickerel can get 2'+ so I don't think they could get eaten if you catch one 15" or so...I agree they may attract the gar. I wouldn't dare put a redfin like this one in with them. The trop would have no problem taking him I'm sure.

gorgeous fish... glad you posted another picture!

a chain pickerel won't (likely) reach that size in the home aquaria, and if you wanted a big one you'd have to catch it...and at that size it's inadvisable to keep in the home aquaria (larger wild animals generally don't adapt well to much smaller spaces...i've had this experience with several species)...the 180g would def be too small for a 2' pike and their overall behavior--

no problem jordan, glad to help; thanks for pointing me towards this thread as i generally tend to stay in that other forum with elongate toothy fishes :)

best of luck with the fish, they are definitely one of my favorite species (or i wouldn't have chosen it as my screen name, haha) --

pickerel!?! :grinno:

thanks again solomon...these fish really are cool!

Always wanted a redfin pickerel. Was dead-set on getting one for a while but then i realized i couldn't provide its requirments anytime soon, so i skipped out. Still someday hope to have a good native tank.

Reminds me i gotta net another creek chub...anybody know when would be the best time to start netting in Nebraska?

actually dont see the point in getting pickerel off of feeders..... The just sit on the top of the tank and do nothing....The only time they do something is when you feed them other fish. You take that away and its pretty boring.

Besides, they eat fish in the wild.....Not pellets.
