My cell phone takes craptacular pics, but you can see that my guy is getting red on all of his fins too. I'd call it more of a reddish or rusty brown, but its definitely getting color. Yours should too. :)

Yeah the lower lobe of the tail is red in all 3 of my Goliaths, some more than others though.... and also, it seems as they get larger the lower lobe of the tail seems to get that shredded look.... i always thought it was a sign of stress, but i dont think that is the case, i think its natural for it to shred and regrow... once mine hit 12+ inches this started to happen, and i cant find any pics of larger Goliaths without this shredded lower lobe

Interesting point there about the shredding. I assume the sawtooth look has something to do with the fact that a tear on a larger fish that is proportionally the same as a tear on a smaller fish is in fact a much larger wound, and would not heal as cleanly as it would on a smaller fish. I also hypothesize that the fact that these fish are nearly never kept solo their entire life.

I am growing mine out partly to test this hypothesis. I am hoping that at the end of the day, we will find that these fish can in fact keep a nice set of hooks as they get larger. We shall see. :)

dont think so, cause its not an injury, or a tear, it just happens.... one of mine still has the hooks upper and lower, the other 2 only the upper.... basically a cut happens, but its not a cut its like a chunk all of a sudden is missing, then you can see the new piece growing in from the inside out... this can be seen cause their tail has a black line around the edge, and when a new piece of tail is coming in to fill the gap, this black line is apparent, just inside the outer edge of the tail, then it grows outward.... this leaves many chunks missing and some chunks growing back, and some growing past the original tail edge giving that shredded appearance..... its not like other fish that get cuts in the tail due to stress, i think this is natural and is cause by the way their tail grows.... i actually like the look of my 2 shredded ones more than the points, but i'm sure the one with points will become shredded very soon

I see what you're saying, that makes sense. When you said shredded I was picturing something a bit different that what you described, I'd call that a jagged edge. I agree though, the jagged look is awesome! How big are yours now? Mine's 10 inches and still has a flawless smooth edge to his tail.

i'd say 12-14 inches smallest to biggest..... i'll get some updated pics soon, having a lot of trouble getting good camera shots
