Redoing Some Filtration (aka, Losing my Sump)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As for the problem with your sump, i think your doing something wrong dude. Firstly your losing water because you have dodgey lids or something so get proper ones made up. you dont need to clean a sump that often so i should'nt be that annoying anyway.

Sumps are meant to be self servicing, in the fact the bacteria is supposed to be doing pretty much all the work. I clean mine every six months. I do agree it can be a little annoying only having 8 inches of space, but 90 percent of store bought systems are like this and it doesnt bother most pl due to the little amount of cleaning they actually require.

As for noise you said it yourself, your using a bucket of something for what ever reason which is not how they are made so this is probably why its loud. If you use it the way its intended with a good quality pump then there should be minimal noise issue. Maybe you can post up some pics of your sump before you modify it so we can give you ideas on your troubles.

Personally if i were you i would take back all the stuff you just bought get your money back and invest it into your sump. With a bit of help you should be able to get it running sweet.

I was just saying that I was happy I was getting the iPhone in may.

One of the main reasons it is loud is because of the standpipe, which is just a pipe. I cannot do any other version because I can't get enough flow through the pipe otherwise.

Then I have the bucket, which is the biotower, which helps with noise, but any biotower is going to sound like a small waterfall.

I will add more later, I got to go

I am not sure how getting enough flow and keeping it quiet cant be done, sounds like your pump is underpowered or your standpipe is too small.

I run a sump with a bucket and I have never had an issue with noise coming from the sump.

Something is wrong with your setup if noise is an issue.

Ok well I cannot make a bigger standpipe seeing as I cannot drill more holes.
To get a good trickle effect you need to disperse the water evenly, the water hitting the surface of the sump water makes a lot of noise.

I do not have problems with vibrations from my pump whatsoever. I cannot have lids on the sump because then the water heats up too much, though I do have a lid on the bucket and on the tank.

There is nothing wrong with using something for what it was not originally designed for. Take pot scrubbies for an example of something used for a completely different purpose that designed for.

Also, any filter is self cleaning when the crap and leftover food sits in it long enough. However, anything left to rot in a filter contributes to bad water quality. Making a filter easy to service will make it easy to keep up with water quality. I want the cleanest water for my fish, as you should, so making a filter you cannot service easily is a waste of time.

I am building it like this and I am getting rid of the sump... Anyone have any input on this design

My major problem are space constraints, with very little space in the stand to work with and a nice [sarcasm]convenient[\sarcasm] case of OCD this makes it difficult for me to justify any reason for keeping the sump. Plus, if I get rod of the sump I can set it up as a tank in my dads science class.

Can you put pics up of your current set up? Also, im all for using things that they are not intented for, if they infact IMPROVE a situation or assist you positivly in some way. Such as using scrubbies as media. My statement above was simply to say that clearly your set up is not working for whatever reason, and in general sumps seem to be fairly well engineered. Not to say they cannot be improved upon, but just to say maybe you should let some guys on here help you out rather then ditching the sump in hast. But as you stated you already have another use for your sump so maybe this is why your not so keen to keep it set up. Anyway hope your new system is what your want buddy.
