I just bought a redtail catfish hes about 2" and he doesnt do anything but sit behind my filter on the back of the tank (inside obviously) and he just gets himself stuck until i push him out. Im new to catfish and didnt know if this is typical or not. I bought a tiger shovelnose last week and my dumb oscar ate it so im happy i got another catfish i really like them but i did get rid of the oscar so no worries!! thanks for looking!

They are skittish at first. May i ask what size tank he is in?

he's in a 55g with a green terror, flowerhorn, and jaguar and so far everyone seems as they arent interested in the catfish i will move him to my 150g when he gets to big for the 55g

Sometimes fish will hide behind filter tubes when there aren't any other suitable hiding spaces. Even a small length of PVC will work.

These guys need 700G+ tanks. Do you have one for him when he outgrows the 150 in a few months?

As derekp said they'll be a little skittish at first. Make sure you have some rockwork for him to hide in.

Thanks, I love my biggons.

The rtc can get about 4.5ft and close to 100 lbs in their lifetime. They are major tank busters and if you look around the site there are tons of information about them. They get HUGE! And they get huge FAST! If given enough room, food, clean water, etc. the rtc should be between 18 and 24 inches within its first year. I have had mine for almost 8 months and he went from 3" to 15" in a 300 gallon. A 150 gallon will not sustain one of these fish for longer than a few months. If you want to keep it for a long time I suggest a giant tank of AT LEAST 1,000G, or an indoor pond. There are lots of ideas and options in the diy section of the forums.

My rtc went from 2" to 24" in 8 months....my suggestion use the 150 as a sump and buy a 500 to use for its first yr. Really though if you properly take care of him your 150 will only be good for about 4-5months

i think nothing short of a pond would do, an 18' diameter pool-pond would be an excellent home for him at full size.
