I have a young redtail and was wondering what the actual adult size will be. Some books say 6 feet, some say 4 feet. What is it really? Mine is just under 12 inches right now and growing fast.

they grow fast and grow huge, the biggest i have seen in a personal aquarium was around 35'' but they get much bigger than that.
i will move this to the catfish section and welcome to MFK.

I would say 6 ft too in a proper aquarium.

And here's a hint of how they attain such a size. Or, as we've come to call it: "But, they got along fine until..."
ha ha ha man i had an uncle that had the hardest time finding tank mates for hes its amazing how big of fish thay can chok down

Brings back painful memories. Im just not down with fish that eat all tankmates and leave turds the same size that a cat or dog would.

I suppose they can grow to 4-5' given the right conditions and tank size, but I think 3' is a more realistic number. I posted a thread a while back asking to see a true 4' RTC in a normal tank not a public aquarium, and didnt see one. If its that normal for them to grow to 4' i'm sure I would have seen some pics. I didnt......
JMO of course....
