Redtail Catfish questions

I usually see people posting worried about the size and unable to house them. I have seen some posts of large RTC from people that were able to build a pond and been able to keep them. Most people can't keep up with the demands of this fish.

I wish they didn't get so big. I would LOVE to have one.

well it depends on the size of the tank, now im not one to believe that a fish "only grows to the size of its tank" thats a myth but a small tank will cause stunting a rtc in a smaller tanks growth may only be 3 foot of course this rtc would look wierd due to stunting almost stubby like but i doubt that a fish will get 6 foot or the size of oddballs picture in a tank a normal person could afford

stunting is bad mojo, if a fish stunts that means it is not properly housed, or is not getting the proper nutrients, or may have internal parasites that are depriving it of vital nutrients needed for healthy growth. I for one say if you are gonna get a fish with potential of 4'+ growth make sure that you are going to have a suitable place to keep it so that if it's potential is 4' it can grow every bit of that. As for not seeing many in the aquarium trade, my theory is that they are just not old enough yet. These fish live for decades and grow their entire lives. Just give us time. I am sure some 4+ footers will show up in the next 10 years or so, especially with the advances in the hobby being made.

I suppose they can grow to 4-5' given the right conditions and tank size, but I think 3' is a more realistic number. I posted a thread a while back asking to see a true 4' RTC in a normal tank not a public aquarium, and didnt see one. If its that normal for them to grow to 4' i'm sure I would have seen some pics. I didnt......
JMO of course....

I posted one at 46", and that was taken 18 months ago, therefore I am sure if it's not actually 48" it shall only be a whisker away from it.... It is in a 6,810 litre tank though. And you are never going to see a 4' RTC in anything remotely resembling a "normal tank".

Mine has grown 9 inches in 6 weeks... his new tank should be cycled in next week. These guys have a voracious appetite, crazy ability to eat other fish. I have lost 3 oscars to a 12 inch RTC so tankmates need to be chosen with care. I am the first to admit, I was not prepared for a growth rate of 7 inches in one month, I thought it would be somewhat slower than that. But all in all this is my favorite freshie of all time and I will do what I have to do for him to live a long and happy life. Good luck with ur RTC!

That means you rtc is growing almost a 1/4" a day :WHOA: You can probably have some buddies over and littererly watch him grow :D That sounds a little extreme to me, whats your feeding schedule ???

POST PICS

I've had a tsn grow 4"in one month not sure how a fish could grow 9" in six weeks, after mine grew like that he only grew about 2" the next month. But hey you never know.

Would a 300g be adequate to house one?

for maybe 2 years. It would be a good starter tank then you would need to start planning your upgrade after the first year.
