Redtail Catfish...

There are breeding pools set up in the Amazon that actually breed Airapima Gigas and RTC. They are about 10,000g though and plumbed directly into the Amazon for a 24/7 water change. Those who work in the ornamental fish trade in South America are always being offered to 'rent' these places for their own breeding projects.

Heres a pic Miguel sent me ;)

Other than that.. It's unlikely you will breed them in any sort of domestic tank..

Yeah, i have heard of those too. In fact captive bred A gigas meat are being exported to europe . I hear it tastes good.

Yeah, I found a website to a farm in S. america that bred A. gigas, Red tails, and Paulicea lutkeni. I'm not sure if that's where most of the captive ones come from, however.

the only way i know to sex them is through disection, but of course then you cant breed them. breeding will occur in a pond

Thanks for all the replies. He is now fast approaching 13" and looks great.
I am probably going to trade him in for a breeding pair or Dovii if at all possible.
Do to the cost,I will never be able to purchase a tank or pond large enough for him, so I'll most likely be letting him go. I am not sure whether it makes a difference, but being blind he will eat anything that fits into his mouth. He must have a tank to himself because he is always swimming around the 135g (510 liter) tank searching for food. Thanks for allowing me to ramble. Good bye for now.

Can you spare your garage? An above ground indoor pong 8'x 12' x 2 1/2 ' will cost you about $700-$800 to build including filter and pumps, thats over 1750 gallons which would keep him happy for a long time. It can be insulated for about $100 more using panels of styrofoam between the floor/walls and the liner. The panel come as 1 1/2 "x 24"x 36" panals and can just be trimmed to fit and glue in place before the liner goes in.

I agree:

i say say start by at least 5 rtc and 12x24ft pond just to breed them they make big nests and lay their eggs inside and 5-6months you'll should have 2-3inch baby versions of there parents. sex of the fish i difficult to tell.

They have never spawned in a tank in captivity, and as for a 55 gallon tank... well!

Chris.
