My redtail just started slamming himself into the sides and bottom of my tank. He keeps smashing his head to the left against the walls. Because of this he snapped one of his whiskers in half. What's going on here?

Lites off. Sounds like major stress! Tankmates? And MOST IMPORTANTLY WATER PARAMS?? High nitrates or any ammonia/nitrites will make a fish go nuts sometimes!

the rtc is 12" and the footprint of the tank is 3'x2' so it's not a space issue. his tankmate is a 6" megalodoras uranoscopus that literally lays under the driftwood 24/7. ammonia is 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 40. i put in a pothos plant about a week ago so the nitrates should be getting lower. i did a 50% wc 2 days ago. i will do another one later today.

In a month or 2 it will be an issue. Rtc's need 200+gal once over 18-20"!

Id say just leave em alone and lites off

Need a bigger tank for 1, need to do more frequent water changes for 2. You have a good bio filter with ammonia @ 0 as well as nitrite @ 0, but with nitrates being 40 that tells us you do not change the water enough to remove the nitrates. Keep in mind that the more water you change the faster the rtc will grow as well.

i just got my shipment of max acr yesterday. I'm starting to build a 8'x5' tank this weekend. i have been changing the water every other day at least 25%. i am changing a ridiculous amount of water all the time. idk why the nitrates are so high, hence addition of the pothos. thanks for the opinions

I agree with lights off. Nitrates are a tad high but not any where near lethal. I wouldn't do to many water changes for a day or 2 because it will cause more stress on him. How's the temp look? No sudden change? Also no ick? Sounds silly but my tig acted weird when he got ick. From a 5$ fish :( The pothos is awesome as well it will help your nitrates after a couple wks.

Temp is steady at 79. No new fish have been added, so no ick

I would check your water source
For nitrates.
