i'm buildin a 475 gallon

Try adding a zero to that and you MIGHT be alright.

Seriuosly though, mine is in a 450 now, had him since November, he's around 18"...he's already outgrowing the 450.

If you're building something, make it as big as possible or else you'll need to build another one shortly.

So not .005 as previously stated? Either way that is very low. I can't imagine exactly what caused his gill curl if his water is that good.

Bad housing in small stages of your RTC's life. Most people fail to see this at a young age or while buying a RTC. And if you tell me that your RTC never had gill curl when you bought it, then 1) your water is bad 2) your tank is to small and your water is bad. I haven't seen, read nor heard of gill curl being a birth defect. As for curing it 1) massage it out 2) cut it where it's curled at. You can keep a rtc with gill curl for all it's life and the cat can be happy, but once the gill curl starts curling the gill plate......not so good.

at one point the water did get bad because i went away for a few days and while i was gone one of my pumps stopped working. when i came back i notice the gill curl and corrected the water.

gill curl can cure but idk bout the young ones ? an older one tho has to get the extra part of the gills trimed off carefully
