Hello; Over the years I have come to hang all of my air pumps, if possible so that they cannot touch anything. I also hang the pump above the top surface of any tank
it is operating. The new pumps may have anti-siphon technology, but in the past a low air pump could siphon water from a tank during a power outage.
I have hung them with rubber bands with good results. A backup safety string to catch the pump when the rubber band gives up is a good idea or sometimes thread the air tube thru something.
I also will loosely wrap a very noisy one in some sort of porous material, often filter
media or porous spongy matrial. I have tried towels and many other things. One that worked was the blue material intended for a cut it yourself furnace air filter.
About the pump in a plastic bag, in addition to possible overheating, the pump will
need a way to intake air in order to operate properly. It seem likely that the bag may stop or severly restrict air flow. Perhaps one of the preforated bags used for produce or some sort of mesh bag.
I have one hanging in what was meant to be a tempoary position, but this has gone
on for over six months. I need to rig up something. I do get used to the buzz after a while.
