reducing aggression in a grow out

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I started with a pair of Trimac's and the female killed the male.
I ordered another Male and grew him out until he was larger than the female.
After successfully breeding, the male killed the female.

After several different arrangements and deaths, I have a single male Trimac in a 180 gal with a Rafael Cat that only comes out at night.

IME raising juvie Trimacs it is very hard to keep aggression to a minimum.
No matter what amount of cover there was in the tank.
Seemed most the fights were started over territory disputes.

A bare tank with a powerhead might be best bet in keeping aggression down.
This way there is nothing to fight over, and strong currents to keep their mind occupied on swimming over bullying.

:nilly::headbang2bigger tank!!

I think a lot of individual caves (pipe or pots or both). A bigger tank will help too. I have raised many an istlanum that way successfully. Trimacs too. My trimac is one of my most aggressive fish, certainly the equal or better of a midas so far as aggression. Probably more aggressive IMO.
