Reef filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Like the person above me said, go for a skimmer.

I had a 65 gal sps dominated reef tank that I took down a few months ago.
I used a skimmer and dosed kalk nearly every day and the water was very clear. I did 10-20% water changes about every 2-3 weeks.

I would recommend this website. Its the best website for anyone wanting to know about saltwater and reef.

A refugium definitely has its pros and cons. Why not have a refugium and skimmer?

I think if I ever go back to reefing (I'd rather have a big pond with monster size fish), I would have a sump/refugium and skimmer as my filtration (live rock a must too).

reefcentral does indeed rock :headbang2 and i already mentioned having both a skimmer and refugium. you must have misunderstood what i said. and why wouldnt you do both a pond and a reef or a reef pond. gotta love the reefer :headbang2

if your going with a reef, i have a 75 with a DSB, refugium with caulerpa, cheatomorpha, and mangroves, and a big skimmer and ive been really pleased witht the setup so far and you might even want to look into setting up a plenum

Centralmayhem, I'd like to one day have a huge reef tank but as you know, it costs a lot of money! The live rock and corals cost a ton. I don't want any normal corals, I want some of the very desirable sps corals and some of them cost over 50+ a frag! Stuff like blue torts, purple bonsais, etc.

I'd prefer a 800+ gallon cube reef tank but I've seen the cost of those things..... I want cube because more viewing space and fish can have a lot of space to swim.

A pond may be more doable for me one day than a large reef tank. Plus, I can once in a while go fishing and catch some of my monster fishes and release them :grinno: :D :headbang2

Oh by the way, get cheatomorpha. It grows fast so you can sell it back to your lfs or trade it online to other people. You can find it most likely at your local fish store if they carry a large saltwater section.

They look like green clumps of tumbleweed. If you have this in your main setup, you'll have lots of small organisms living in it like copepods that your fish or certain corals willl eat (corals will eat the eggs of these pods)

You could also have it in your sump as well.

As far as a deep sand bed (DSB) go to reefcentral.com Big debate over dsb's that you may want to read and learn more about.

You may be losing trace elements to water changes, skimmer, activated carbon, etc so you may want to look into using some supplements.

Oh yeah, in case you might be thinking about this, I would recommend a product called cyclopeeze. Your fish will love it! You put a little bit in and within 2 seconds, your fish are going nuts for the food.

Hope this all helps

I've used the extreme garlic and it has the same effect.

just my opinion, or what has worked for me. I run a small wetdry/bio-tower, and a large sandbed/refugium filter section. also a pretty decent skimmer, it could be better but it pulls a good amount of skimate, and water checks out good to.

oh yeah, most important part for reef tank, live rick, and lots of sand.

me regium area is on a reverse lighting cycle from the main tank also.
