Reef sharks??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont want to get into how big it is becuase it is not my pond and I know it is not big enough for their life. The lemon is 3ft. the bonet is the same size the black tips are all around 2ft plus a couple inches. They get fed very well.

Cool.

Still it must be pretty interesting to work with them. At those size their still a pretty good size but not too large - yet.

Ray77 - The filteration set up on that pond must be pretty extensive to deal with that large bio-load. Care to post some pictures?

Also as you stated you know the pond is not big enough to house them long term, so why not step in and tell the owner this? Did he not do any research before purchasing those Sharks?

The filtration on this thing is very crazy. We have had some of the sharks for 3years and some for 1 year now. I can get pics next time I am there. It is not a private person but yet a store that I work at one day a week just to keep my mind off the accounting work I do full time. The owner knows his stuff very well but does not care of keeping them for their life time. Most are actually for sale.

Aquatica in Tinley park IL. the lemon is $1000 and the black tips are $1500-$1700 depending on his mode. lol. Closed Mondays. Otherwise anyone feel free to call and confirm this setup.

Still - as I've said before - these species either belong in the hands of a few qualified private Aquarists(with the resources & financial means to keep them for life), or Public Aquariums.

And as for prices - well both Blacktip reefs & Lemons tend to be a bit cheaper along the East & West coasts.

dose anyone on here know all the kinds of aquarium sharks there are to buy? I' am looking into buying one or two sharks and I was wondering what kinds are out there for sale.

Depends on your tank size (deminsions and gallonage), what kind are you loooking for, and what is the filtration and setup.

At the moment i dont have a tank or anything i' am just trying to find out what would work best and whats out there. i am new to all of this. i' ve always liked shark but naver got one. whats good to start and what kinds can you actually buy?

If you have the money, the connections, and the system, you can get your hands on basically anything minus a few species. I would recommend atleast a 300 gallon to start, with only one shark, either a Coral Cat Shark or a Marbeled Cat Shark. But do alot of reading first, and ask alot of questions. This is not something you want to rush into.

So true.

Sharks in general aren't ideal for any one just beginning SW Aquarist. They are only suited for experienced Saltwater Hobbyist. Even the most hardy of sharks can be very tough to keep for someone who's a novice with Salt Water.

There are several species - possible more than a 2-3 dozen species that are available to a clever & resourceful aquarist. The problem is not all are generally suited for home aquaria.

Species such as Nurses, or Lemons - which get huge(9-12') can often be found at prices under $1,000 - but are completely unsuitable for most home aquaria because of their adult size, activity levels, & general requirements.

The truth is you need to research the various species, and the requirements for keeping any species (be it a shark, a catfish, or pacu) before going buying one.
