reef tank lighting

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have seen sw tha look great under t5. I have a friend with a 75g tank under t5 lighting (6 bulbs at 324 watts) a lil more the 4 wpg. Thats enough light for what i want :), thx for all the gr8 advice. it helped :)

For some clarification, watts per gallon are irrelevant.
PAR is what is important. Photosynthetically Active Radiation.
T5HO has equivalent PAR to 250w MH and is more than adequate for any coral maintenance.

On a 75g, a 4 bulb or 6 bulb T5HO lamp will be more than adequate. Lamps driven by IceCap ballast are true HO lamps as the bulbs are overdriven. They will burn brighter and truer to color rating if powered with an IceCap Ballast.

Also, blue lighting or actinic supplementation is NOT required to grow corals. You can grow healthy corals with a 5500K lamp. What the blue lighting does is improve coral color by fluorescing the corals.(makes the greens, oranges, reds, purples Pop out at you.) Blue light supplementation is recommended because the corals will look more colorful, but it is not required to grow a healthy coral.
