Refractometer?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been told that the cheapest refractometer is better than the best hydrometer. However, I'm still using a hydrometer. I'm planning on upgrading some time in the future but my limited resources must pay for other things first. My hydrometer gets me in the right ballpark and my lfs uses a refractometer. I take them a water sample every now and then to get a second opinion.

By the way, that statement pertains to the precision of a refractometer, which is correct.

For a fish only system, a hydrometer is fine. For species such as starfish or sea horses (which need consistent salinity levels), a refractometer becomes much more important.
