Refuge - vs- Bio-ball Sump

Thanks Tankbuster for the picts, the photos always help me get a better understanding of what one could look like. I'm going to take your advice and head to a local store and ask to see their set up. What type of life should you add to a freshwater refugium? Floating plants was one sugestion, should I add aquatic snail, frogs, or anything that would turn up the recomended the bottom substrate? I'm also assuming sand would be the choice for the refugium?

Snails would be fine, I am not sure what kind though but I am sure someone here will give a suggestion, I woul djust poke the sand all over everytime a wate rchange is done. If a snail dies and you dont notice it, the water will turn south real fast.

TankBuster calm your excitement a little, my babel fish almost died trying to translate your first post :D .

Whatever you put in you refugium is what you may end up with in your tank, so...snails in ...snails out, same with plants. And F/W plants need a rest period so no 24/7 lighting.

MP... good link on the sump baffles, I forgot that one.

Dr Joe, I have a friend in California with a 300 g. tank with 6 red tail cats in at with a freshwater refugium and plants have 24 hour lighting and no issues at all. That is one of the reasons I started my refugium. He got the idea from the lfs he works at that has 24 hour lighting on a planted freshwater ref. This may work for some and others not so much, I believe it would depend on the type of plants you choose. Hope this was mellow enough for ya,

Just when your sure you've got ALL the rules right, someone comes along and...:D

Oh, and very reserve...you make me proud  .

plants do not need a dark period to grow the dark cycle of photosynthesis is called such because it doesn’t require light problem with 24/7 light is some plants propagation is triggered by day length so with out a dark period they just grow (no new plants)

this is handy if you ever get into weed growing;)

this is what i use
