My original thread

I originally was looking at the 2073 pro 3e eheim for my 75gallon, and was later advised that 2217's would be a better deal. That is still close to 300$ for those 2 bad boys however.

I'm having to crunch the pennies as much as possible because I have a lot of ordering to do in the next week: new light fixture and bulbs, glass canopy, uv sterilizer, 100$ worth of low tech plants and driftwood, and I recently(like yesterday) decided to get in to some photography and purchase my first DSLR camera. The camera and lens are gonna run me close to 500$ for just those 2 things. I just ordered a trio of different fancy plecs so that's another 100$ gone. Budget started out at $1000 after the above I technically have 30$ left for more filtration which is a duh think that I need to have ;p.

I was thinking about getting 2 of the fluval 404's for 85$ each and hopefully the wife loves me enough to let me go over my budget a smidge(she did want a new camera enyhow so she should go in halvsies with me right?!) so that should free up another 250 or so.. leaving me with 90 to get a pump and sponge for the UV sterilizer so I can hook it up to a prefilter and maximize it as well as the cansiters since I won't have to throttle the fluvals back.

Does this sound like a feasible idea? Will the fluval 404's do fine with the emp 400 on the back? I was told to use the emp 400 for mech filtration. What would I need to find/purchase for the 404's to increase their bio filtration.

In the end the tank will have 6-7 botia stiata's, 1 spotted medusa, 1 king tiger, 1 peppermint pleco, small school of lemon tetras or giant danios with 2-3 EBJD's depending on how they survive (which will be well I hope with proper filtration and uv sterilizer) and get along with each other.

Thanks for your advice and time!

i think so yes i have 2 of those 85 dollar 404s from ebay on my 75 with 2 severums a thin bard datnoid a flagtail and it works awsome

for a 75 gallon one 2217 will be plenty just run an ac110 on there if you need a little more mechanical

yes im sure you could diy something but it will get dirty and clog quite quick
I don't mind cleaning/replacing every 3-4 days if need be to get better life/use out of the filter. I'll have to look around I guess. thanks.

Is it possible to put a mesh or sponge on the intakes of the 404's to prevent plant matter from being sucked in?

go to the local fish store or even the corporate places. find a sponge and slap it on. it will act as a prefilter for your canister and will trap any large matter before it kills your impeller. just make sure its not a super fine sponge or youll kill the intake rate.

I've used 404's for awhile. With average stocking you could probably just have 1, but with those plecos 2 might be better. As for media you can use the biomax but I just filled my baskets with all scrubbies.

Buy a sponge for a Aquaclear 300 (80 or whatever they are now) cut a slit in the center of one end and slide it over the intake of your filter. easy to take off and clean.
