Relatively peaceful Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Firemouths are very peaceful for cichlids. A guy who teaches with me keeps one in a community tank with no trouble.

Not sure about blue acara, but keyholes are pretty mellow. And festivums (used to be C. festivus but maybe changed). Uaru are supposed to be peaceful but I haven't kept them so I can't speak firsthand.

^ Doh! Yeah, forgot about the plants...

Check out some of the mellower pike cichlids.

I have a mixed fish S. American tank with Juruparis, Rainbow Cichlids, and Severums plus some Silver Dollars, one Red Hook, Raphael Cats and a Silver Arowana. The fish have been together for about 2 years and I was wondering what other cichlids might go with them that are not too aggressive. Would rather have species that do not destoy or eat plants down to the roots as eventually the fish will be moved to a larger planted tank (except the S.D. and R.H.)

Thanks

If you have had the Aro for 2 years then he is going to be large enough to eat alot of the previous suggestions. I am currently growing out some red bay snooks that I hope will live with my aro in a 300g planted tank. Plans are set to get the tank this summer so the snooks (2.5"-3") are gonna need to do some growing so they don't become food for the aro(15"-16")

I saw some of these locally (about 3") but I get different info on their agressiveness, some books say peaceful gentle giants, others that they use their size to bully everything. Is this just individual fish or bad info?

I have two that are total bullies. I wouldn't put one in a peaceful tank. Maybe I just happened to get aggressive ones, because everything I read about them before I got them said they were peaceful.
