Reliable power heads?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is what im trying to avoid I read reviews of powerheads leaking voltage

It is always a risk. Not much you can do. I had voltage from heaters too. I installed a grounding probe to mitigate that risk. That has its pros and cons itself. I was not a fan of my jebao but its been several years. While it was controllable and moved lots of water, it was extremely flimsy. I preferred the koralia I had owned. On my upcoming tank, I am looking to try eductors seeing I will be using a strong pump.

Any alternating current in a tank can induce a slight current, it's not necessarily due to faulty equipment. If you're that worried about it, install a grounding probe.

In a 125 i would do a couple medium to large koralia powerheads scattered throughout.

I have a koralia thats at least 10 years old lmao. They work well. And are very appropriately priced.

I also experience a no brand China made powerhead leaking voltage. I found the power wire at the top of the pump broke after two years of use. It was after this incident I stop buying China made powerhead. I had good luck with maxi jet and koralia. Both lasted 5+ yrs and are fairly inexpensive when it goes on sale online. The only time it stop working was when I dropped it on the floor.

Oh good one, I forgot about maxi jet. I’ve never had one of those fail. The marine land ones should NOT be on the list. All three I have had random reverse flow after a power outage. Considering where we mount these that could be a disaster or fire

i thought all Maxijet were Marineland products. Correct me if I am wrong. I have used the old maxijet 1200 and the newer one made by Marineland. I have zero problems with them. My aro would bang on it and never an issue.

I think this one is a my bad. I was thinking the old Maxijet powerheads like below.

Pic below is the ones in referring to. I didn’t realize these were maxijets. After a quick search these are the new model.

To clarify: I love the old maxijet model but have negative feedback on the new model.

The Cobalt powerheads are made in Italy like the old Maxijets were. The newer Maxijets are now made in China. At least that's what I've read. Cobalt powerheads are supposedly made by a group that splintered off Maxijet.

I haven't verified this info but saw that from several sourced.

The new maxijets and the old maxijets are NOT the same. I can 100% vouch for that. I used maxijets right up to the day they switched over to their new factory.

Quility control is ****, plastic seems lighter and cheaper, they are now louder.

I have not used the cobalt but i would have to agree with everybody else. It seems like the cobalts are the same old maxijets and the maxijets currently sold by Marineland are trash.

Another point about Cobalt: their powerheads come with a three year warranty. Use a credit card that has the warranty extender benefit and you have 4 years not to worry.

I like that my Cobalt MJ1200. I can adjust it to direct the flow a little downward and I was able to order the small sponge prefilter for it so I wouldn't worry about fish getting sucked in.
I like how how it can be mounted from more than one direction as well.

Alone, I think it would be too weak for my 125g for what I'm trying to do. I want stronger current for clown Loaches, panda garra and rainbowfish.

The Aquaclear 70 is stronger. I run it to move water in back. The prefilters were too big, I thought, and I didn't want to end up getting sucked into buying their cartridges. I was afraid if fish getting sucked in so I use it to run a double sponge filter. (Ironic considering I thought prefilter was too big).
Edit:
When I was researching, i heard good things about Koralia, with the exception that they sometimes run backward if you turn them on and off a lot. I was just too worried small fish might get sucked in the sides and there didn't seem to be a good way to protect the sides so I went with Cobalt and Aquaclear instead.
